What Is Gluten?

Gluten is a general name for proteins found in wheat, rye, barley, and oats. It consists of two peptides, gliadin and glutenin. Gluten products help hold food together as a binding agent and filler in processed food. Gluten is also found in household products like shampoo, cosmetics, lotion, cleaning products, and even some medication.

As a certified gluten practitioner, Dr. Vaught can help you detox your home of gluten and suggest ways to help you avoid gluten in your daily life. Gluten sensitivity causes more than just gastrointestinal problems. Gluten also manifests in neurological dysfunctions. Why is Wheat Causing Such a Problem Now?

The wheat we consume today isn't the same that our ancestors ate. It was naturally grown and there was no highly processed hybrid wheat like there is today. Modern wheat is grown in controlled environments with the application of various chemicals even before it’s processed for consumption. Chemicals such as glyphosate and roundup contain active ingredients that are used as a drying agent for a uniform crop maturity, in turn making the harvest easier and profitable.

The problem is that the World Health Organization has classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen. It can create problems in our microbiome which can lead to all kinds of chronic disorders and autoimmune diseases.

Due to the excess usage of these chemicals, the majority of wheat products in the U.S. contain traces of cancer-initiating glyphosate. That's not all, glyphosate-based herbicides are toxic and endocrine disruptors in human cell lines. This results in hormone mimicry of androgens, estrogens, or thyroid hormones and could possibly cause overstimulation.

What Is Gluten Sensitivity – Is It Real?

The technical term for gluten sensitivity is Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS). People with inflamed guts caused by their sensitivity to gluten and their villi (small finger-like projections lining the gut) are in the process of atrophying, ending with the Celiac Disease. However, some people with NCGS don't have any gut issues, but their gluten sensitivity causes autoimmunity to other organs and systems (like the thyroid). NCGS is completely real and can manifest in any tissue of the human body.

Neurological Manifestations, NO GI Symptoms

In 1996, the gluten sensitivity in some individuals was shown to manifest solely with neurological dysfunction. There were no symptoms of GI that was discovered in most patients with neurological manifestations of NCGS. Signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy constituted the most common neurological manifestation of Celiac Disease.

NCGS triggers autoimmunity via molecular mimicry or gut inflammation. Both intestinal and extraintestinal autoimmune disorders can occur when the finely tuned trafficking of macromolecules is dysregulated in genetically susceptible individuals.

There are series of studies linking autoimmunity to NCGS. One of the largest studies on gluten sensitivity suggested that mortality rates are higher for people with NCGS than CD. The same study also reports that individuals with gut inflammation are more likely to have leaky gut, and this majorly caused due to autoimmune disorders.

You cannot always tell if you’re sensitive to gluten by the way you feel after eating it

Many people are immediately affected after consuming foods with gluten. However, there are individuals who may not get immediate reactions or feel the impact at all. This doesn't mean that there is no side effect! In the long run, it can cause symptoms like anxiety, depression, insomnia, migraine, ADHD, and many more. These symptoms don’t always occur immediately after you consume your food, and that's the reason many aren't able to connect the dots.

What is a Gluten-Related Disorder?

Gluten-related disorders are disruptions in the functioning of the body, blood chemistry, immune system, etc. due to the consumption of gluten. Shockingly, there are more than 300 gluten-related diseases; and the infected person will be ignorant about it as it takes years to build up.

It can manifest in your heart and cause Idiopathic Cardiomyopathy or in your joints in the form Rheumatoid Arthritis. Gluten-related disorders always tend manifest in the weakest parts of your body.
